Service Dog Prep Classes

Are you unsure about which class to take at the Gas City Dog Club? The following is a comprehensive description of each type of class offered at our club. Ranging from basic obedience to specialized courses like agility or scent work, there's a lot for your dog to learn!

Service Dog Prep Classes

When?

This is an ongoing program with individual times arranged:

Description

Registration Fee - Nil

These classes will help the dog & handler team acquire the skills to be evaluated for a Service Dog Qualification Assessment required to have the animal registered as a Service Dog.

Training Prerequisite: Dogs must have basic obedience course or the equivalent skills.   Dogs must be of sound body, have good joints and muscle tone.   Handlers must be able to control their dogs.

Lessons Covered:

  • Walking on a leash without pulling and sitting or lying down when the handler stops
  • Sitting, lying down, and standing on command
  • Staying when sitting, lying down, or standing
  • Working and listening with other dogs in the environment
  • Coming when called and performing a heel (sitting in front for the owner to grasp the collar)
  • Learning the difference between time for work and time for play
  • Some socializing with other dogs and other handlers
  • Calmness with:
  • --- Vehicles – Loading, unloading, public transit, calmness around traffic
  • --- Entering/exiting buildings/rooms
  • --- Crowds/Strangers
  • --- Distractions – food, visual & auditory distractions
  • Mitigation tasks as prescribed by a physician.

Pre-Registration Not Required

Registration Fee: $10.00/drop-in session or $100 for a12-session punch card

NOTE:  In order to provide the best possible experience for dog and handler, the Gas City Dog Club reserves the right to control the number of dogs present in the training room during the drop-in session.
